There are many treatments for enlarged prostates. In the case of milder troubles, it is often enough to just wait and monitor your development. In the case of mild or moderate trouble, medication in the form of tablets can be tried.
In cases of more serious problems or complete blockage, the most common solution is to operate. For medical or other reasons, some patients cannot be operated. This forces the use of the option of using a catheter to empty the bladder. There are two types of catheters, indwelling catheters and intermittent catheters (ISC). An indwelling catheter is left inside the body after the bladder has been emptied and can lead to complications. An ISC catheter is inserted in the urethra only when the bladder needs to be emptied and is removed afterwards. ISC is often used while waiting for medication to take effect or in anticipation of an operation.
